There’s a new Special Interest Group in town, replete with wand-wielding maniacs and spacefaring adventures: the Dungeons M Dragons SIG. We formed to help gamers of all kinds find each other, form new groups, find new games, get advice on old ones, and simply have a good time.

Due to updated American Psychological Association guidelines, Dr. Renee Lexow, American Mensa ’s Supervisory Psychologist, has decided that American Mensa will no longer share test score data with current, former, or potential members.

After much planning, we're introducing a new way for candidates to qualify for membership. In October, in addition to Local Group testing and Prior Evidence, candidates will be able to schedule a private test session at facilities managed by our new partner, Prometric.

The referendum rules require two months’ notice of the referendum, and it has therefore been decided that voting in the referendum will begin on Nov. 1, 2020, and close 15 days later, on Nov. 15, 2020.

Even before the pandemic nudged the event online, this year’s satirical take on the traditional pageant was bound to break barriers. The results delivered the first Mr. and Ms. Mensa duo, Jay Patton and Jen Zbylski, and raised for the Mensa Education & Research Foundation a record $42,731 — more than double any previous year.

We annually celebrate the members and Local Groups who go above and beyond to help American Mensa thrive. Volunteers are our lifeblood, and these individuals and groups represent the best of the best.

What started with a concern for their own grandparents’ safety, Young Mensans Matthew Casertano and Dhruv Pai’s volunteer group, Teens Helping Seniors, now connects teens with seniors nationwide to provide contactless grocery and medicine delivery to those most vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their classroom routine upended by the pandemic, Central Florida Mensa YM’s Max Boger and Nicole Ward quickly realized their situation wasn’t unique. The two banded together to create Orlando Student Tutoring to address the challenges of distance learning.

For the foreseeable future, we won’t be gathering together in person. And for most Local Groups, that means calendars have suddenly become very empty. But there are bright sides to this change, and there are things we can do to connect even without breathing the same air, without sharing the same table.

As Covid-19 continues to impact American Mensa and the rest of the world’s meetings, gatherings, and events, it’s critical for those planning events and test sessions to provide assurance to attendees that the event is as safe as possible.

We’re living through a historic time, and it’s clear that our world, and families, will be different on the other side. Remember that it’s okay to take a break, to let go of expectations, and most importantly – be gentle with yourself.

Word of mouth from peers is a top recruitment effort within many organizations, so who better than our own members to help us identify and recruit new members to Mensa? The Mensa Voucher Program leverages the strength of our membership to identify and encourage others to test or submit evidence to qualify for membership for free.

With one swashbuckled boot planted firmly in the past and another stepping toward the future, a landing party of Mensans boldly told a packed Comic-Con audience what science fiction holds for them now and tomorrow.
