Local Group survey: You answered, we're listening

Last October, Local Group leaders were surveyed on the state of the organization as it pertains to Local Groups and the volunteer leaders who run them. The survey results were shared with the American Mensa Committee at its December meeting (presentation starts at 34:15). Key information from the survey is — and will continue to be — used strategically to help the organization support Local Groups.

Key findings from the survey include:

  • Confirmation that Local Group officers are experiencing challenges with such issues as geographic diversity, toxic atmospheres, burnout and attendance.
  • A need for assistance with resources, strong promotions, training, funding and addressing strong volunteer personalities.
  • A desire for timely and accurate responses from the National Office, plus assistance in connecting with other Local Group leaders to share best practices, and assistance with funding.

The organization has begun to make adjustments, some of which will take time to institute, adjust or find the right mix for the organization. This work requires:

  • Local Groups, national leaders and the National Office to work together in partnership to leverage their respective strengths to address the various needs of Local Groups.
  • Work to identify and provide resources and training to support the roles of volunteers at all levels of the organization.

Clearly, there are many details that go into each of these aspects, and various committees such as the Leadership Development and Local Group Logistics — along with the RVCs — are using the survey results to address many of these areas.

Continue to watch for updates on Local Group support, and remember to provide feedback and suggestions to Membership Coordinator Nicole Sorensen or your RVC throughout the year so that we can apply that feedback to enhance support for Local Groups.
