Minnesota Science Fiction and Fantasy SIG Discussion

  • Minnesota Mensa
  • October 25, 2026

I was going through my books the other day and noticed a few by Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, and realized we haven't covered humor as a discussion topic while I've been the coordinator of Mensa’s Science Fiction and Fantasy SIG. We need to rectify that situation. From satire and absurdism, like in works from Adams and Pratchett, to odd-couple comedy, such as in Red Dwarf, to humorous moments in dramatic works, we'll examine humor in science fiction and fantasy, and talk about our favorites as our focused discussion.

Audience: Do you enjoy reading or watching stories with space travel, aliens, or futuristic technologies? How about sword and sorcery adventures? From Jules Verne and H.G. Wells to J.R.R. Tolkien to the latest authors and stories, we cover a wide range of speculative fiction (along with plenty of interest in actual science and technology).

What to Expect: It's a casual conversation online in your own comfy chair at home. Share what you want or just watch and listen. Leave when you need or want to.

Meetings start by sharing what you've read and watched (recommend or avoid?) since you last shared. After the focused discussion, we'll cover topics and other ideas for future meetings. Tell us about a topic you think we should focus on. After the first hour, we'll take a short break and then move to an open discussion of whatever's on your mind about science fiction, fantasy, and maybe just interesting science.
