Sebastian V.: Driven by Curiosity, Guided by Kindness
Sebastian is a 10-year-old from South Texas who proudly represents the incredible talent of children and youth in the Rio Grande Valley. At age 2, he could name every U.S. president. By age 3, he was reading books independently, and by age 4, he had memorized the capital of every country in the world. Before kindergarten, he could mentally solve square roots and algebra problems.
Since then, Sebastian has skipped one full grade level and advanced an additional two grade levels in mathematics at his school. He is a member of Mensa, Intertel, National Math Stars, the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, Hope Squad, and served as Student Council President for his elementary. He is also a candidate for the Davidson Young Scholars program.
In 2025, with the support of National Math Stars, he was accepted into the Campersand summer math camp at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he experienced living in a dormitory for the first time. In 2026, again with the support of National Math Stars, he participated in the Cambridge Math Circle summer program hosted at MIT. Sebastian has continued to advance rapidly in mathematics, recently completing a year-long online course in Algebra and preparing to begin Geometry this fall through Art of Problem Solving.
Beyond his academic accomplishments, Sebastian is a well-rounded and inquisitive young leader whose interests include chess, creating trivia games, karate, kayaking, coding, 3D printing, music, Pokémon, video games, and playing lotería with his grandmother, all of which reflect his creativity, determination, and love of exploration.
Most importantly, Sebastian’s kindness and compassion inspire his current dream of becoming a pediatrician. Through this path, he hopes to care for typically developing children, like his sister, as well as children with disabilities or special needs, like his 9-year-old brother, who was born with Down syndrome. Sebastian is also exploring other possibilities for his future, including following in his dad’s footsteps as an engineer, becoming a scientist, or pursuing another field where he can use his talents and curiosity to serve others in his community and beyond.
